He was Past President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 21, Annapolis Royal, and a former Lieutenant of the 84th Independent Field Battery of the Yarmouth Militia Reserve. Gerard had many interests such as reading, music (particularly Cape Breton fiddle), playing the spoons, campfires at The Fundy Spray, puzzles of any kind, and travel. During that time, he was asked to supervise courses for new recruits at the Coast Guard College in Sydney and at the RCMP Depot in Regina. He really loved that job, and remained there until retirement. Upon relocating to Annapolis Royal, he was offered a bilingual position as a Federal Fisheries Officer (Conservation & Enforcement) which included vessel operation and navigation. He then studied for two years toward a B.B.A. Gerard began his life in Cheticamp then relocated to Weymouth, where he attended school and then was further educated at receiving a B.A. He was the second of four sons born to the late William à Baptiste and Elizabeth à Moise (Aucoin) LeFort of Cheticamp.
